New Student Checklist for New Freshmen starting
Fall semester
- Complete your Admitted Students To-Do list.
- Finish high school right! If you are an engineering major you must meet all of the admission requirements including:
- Complete a math course in the senior year (grades 12 or 13).
- No D’s or F’s in any high school math course on final transcript.
- Successfully complete Pre-Calculus or a higher-level math course.
- Have AP scores and final transcripts (high school and college) sent to UNC Charlotte Admissions.
- See College of Engineering computer requirements.
- UNC Charlotte uses math placement levels to determine which math classes you are eligible to register for. Math levels can be assigned based on SAT or ACT score, AP credit, credit from other institutions or math placement tests.
- If you have not been assigned a math placement level or wish to improve your math placement level, you may take UNC Charlotte’s math placement. Please complete before attending SOAR.
- Click for information about what starting math course and math level is associated with different College of Engineering Majors.
- Consider applying to the Engineering Freshman Learning Community. Applications are open November through July 1.
- Register for SOAR and complete the New Freshmen Virtual Orientation before attending.

Frequently Asked Questions
Please attend one of our Friday Virtual Town Hall Q&A or watch one of our recorded Town Hall online events.
You will hear about our resources and have an opportunity to ask your questions of our faculty, advisors and students.
What about existing AP Scores or dual enrollment credit?
If you have AP scores for Calculus AB or BC of 3 or higher, you can use this in place of your Math SAT or Math ACT scores to determine your first math course. Similarly, if you have successfully taken community college courses in Pre-Calculus, Calculus 1, or a higher-level math, you can use your transfer credit to select your next level math course.
CAUTION: Because math is a foundation for most of what is done in your major, we caution against jumping to Calculus 2 or 3 based on completion of your AP exam. Take time to evaluate if you believe you have a solid understanding and can apply the theory of Calculus or if you would benefit from taking Calculus 1 again to build a more solid mathematical foundation.
NOTE: We can only use AP and college transfer credit that appears on your UNC Charlotte records as confirmation of course completion. Therefore, make sure your transcripts are sent to the Admissions office before you arrive for SOAR.
What about AP scores and/or college credit that have not been posted yet?
If you have not yet received your AP scores and/or college transfer credits, your schedule at SOAR will be built using available transcript information based on Math SAT or Math ACT score placement. If transfer credit or AP scores post after SOAR that would necessitate a change in your fall schedule, you need to contact your academic advisor.
International Students
If you do not have Math SAT or Math ACT scores, it will be necessary for you to take a Math Placement test through the UNC Charlotte Math Department. Please complete the Math Placement test prior to attending SOAR.
