UNC Charlotte honors engineering alumna for industry leadership and service
Niner Engineer Bilkis Banu, who graduated in 2021 with a Ph.D. in electrical engineering, was recognized as one of the University’s 2025 “10 under Ten.”
On Thursday, February 19, UNC Charlotte hosted the eighth annual “10 under Ten” awards. Presented by GOLD Alumni Network at the Popp Martin Student Union, the ceremony celebrated 10 alumni from the past decade whose professional success matched their meaningful service and philanthropic impact.
A technology development manager at Duke Energy, Banu leads modeling and simulation efforts within the emerging technology group.
Her role allows her to test and validate new, high-tech ways to improve the energy industry through power-grid technologies. She uses computer simulations to see how new energy systems work before they are used in the real world, helping Duke Energy adopt and deploy these technologies faster.
“This award is a meaningful symbol of growth and gratitude for me. I am deeply thankful for the opportunities and skills UNC Charlotte provided, which continue to shape my journey every day. Being able to contribute to the school makes this honor all the more special.”

Banu remains active with her alma mater by demonstrating a commitment to workforce development. For example, she mentors future engineers through the Center for Advanced Power Engineering Research collaborative, which is designed to support new talent in the energy industry. She also helps provide engineering students access to high-quality learning tools, such as advanced power-system simulation platforms.
