“Antibiotic resistance has been a silent pandemic,” said Mariya Munir, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering in the William States Lee College of Engineering. “My idea was to see how I could come up with different strategies to combat antibiotic resistance in the environment.”
Munir, along with co-collaborators from across campus and funding from the NIH, researches antibiotic-resistant bacteria and detects ways to eliminate them. Her work is the type that will create long-term applications for hospitals and other clinical settings.
