I. Approval of minutes

After correction of typographical errors at two places in the August, 2001 minutes, the minutes of the April, 2001 and the August, 2001 CEFO meetings were approved as amended. The minutes as amended and approved may be found at http://www.coe.uncc.edu/~jcarter/cefo.

II. Update on General Education Requirements, D. Bayer
David Bayer gave a presentation highlighting the new General Education requirements. The information presented may be found on the UNCC web page under Academic Affairs, at the following address: http://www.uncc.edu/gened/sep2001.htm.

III. Faculty Constitution
Ed Braun stated that the COE Faculty Constitution is in serious need of updating. He encouraged faculty to volunteer themselves or nominate others for membership on an ad-hoc committee to update the Faculty Constitution.

IV. ABET Changes w.r.t. co-op
ABET will no longer accredit co-op in the manner it did in the past. A committee, consisting of the co-op advisor from each Department, Beth Kreusch, Linda Thurman, and chaired David Bayer, will look into the possibility of restructuring the co-op program in the light of the accreditation changes. Bob Coleman stated that the current three-semester co-op is accepted by the NC Board of Engineers and Surveyors as one year of experience towards P.E. registration, and that any changes that threaten this should be avoided.

V. Department Chair Reports
Brief reports on the current status of each department were given by Chairpersons Young, Tranjan, Liu and Raja.

VI. Dean’s Report, R. Johnson
Budget: Dean Johnson expressed the view that growth in enrollment will help offset the budget cuts. We are better off than many of the other UNC campuses, and most people will not notice much change, other than in the size of the salary increase.

ENGR 1202: The Engineering FAIT team (Patterson, Graham, Kane, Phillips, Tolley) made recommendations to CAC today concerning the future of ENGR 1202. Their strongest recommendation is to return ENGR 1202 to the Departments. Dean Johnson encouraged faculty to submit thoughts and comments by email to CAC or the members of the FAIT team.

General Education: The changes in General Education requirements provide some substantial advantages to us. The foreign language problem is at last resolved by having foreign language as an admission requirement without the need for a proficiency test. Advising is strongly criticized in surveys because the current system is too complicated. The simplicity of the new liberal studies requirements is a great advantage in this respect.

Enrollment: Our figures for new enrollment over the past three years (474, 492, 480 for Fall 1999, 2000, 2001) show that our college is not growing at the rate of the rest of the University. This problem will need attention.

Building: Dean Johnson showed slides of building plans and images showing the current vision of what the new buildings will look like.

“Operation ABET”: Once again, Dean Johnson reminded faculty of the importance of the following acronyms:
