Accessing Linux

From a Personal Computer

To access Linux from a personal computer the program FastX must be used. Off campus you will need to first connect using the campus VPN. The VPN can be downloaded here and an article on setting it up for the first time is here. Use the table below to download and install FastX.

Command Line

If you have Internet access and have downloaded a SSH2 client such as PuTTY, you can access your files from off campus, write and/or compile programs, or perform any of other Linux command-line tasks. This is the most secure way to access your account using Linux from off campus.

The server you would connect to using the SSH client is: engr-lcs1.uncc.edu or other Linux compute servers.
