49er Engineers Place Third at NASA Robotic Mining Competition
The UNC Charlotte Astrobotics Robotic Team, the 49er Miners, took third place in the Caterpillar Autonomy Award at the 2018 NASA Robotic Mining Competition at Kennedy Space Center on Friday May 18. The team joined the elite group of only a handful of schools in the history of the competition that have accomplished a fully autonomous mining run (approximately 50 colleges and universities have competed each year over the past nine years).
49ers Place 2nd in the Nation in NASA Student Launch Competition
The results of NASA’s 2018 Student Launch competition are tabulated, and The William States Lee College of Engineering’s 49er Rocketry Team placed second in the nation, the highest finish in the team’s history. First place went to Vanderbilt University’s Aerospace Design Lab team, the team’s fourth win in the past five years.
Duke Energy Engineer’s Day

2018 Spring Commencement
The William States Lee College of Engineering graduated 576 students at UNC Charlotte’s spring 2018 commencement over the weekend. The graduates included with 386 bachelor’s degrees, 172 with master’s and 18 with Ph.D.s.
Student Team Presents Research at International Conference
For their innovative research on safety and fire protection strategies for tall wood structures, three graduate students from The William States Lee College of Engineering were chosen to present their work at the 2018 Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) International Conference on Performance Based Codes and Fire Safety Design Methods in Honolulu, Hawaii, in April.
Spring 2018 Senior Design Expo Winners
The William States Lee College of Engineering held its spring-semester Senior Design Expo on May 3, 2018. Teams who started in fall 2017 presented their completed two-semester projects, while teams who started in spring 2018 presented their first-semester design-concept posters.
Chen 2018 Top Teaching Assistant
The Graduate School has named Xiaoxue (Lisa) Chen, Ph.D. Mechanical Engineering, as a 2018 outstanding graduate teaching assistant (TA).
