Dr. Chris Vermillion Wins NSF CAREER Award

Dr. Chris Vermillion, an assistant professor of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, has won a $500,000 National Science Foundation CAREER award to further his research in creating low-cost methodologies that optimize the combined physical system and controller for high-altitude wind energy systems.

New Siemens Energy Large Manufacturing Solutions Laboratory

With the support of local industry who will benefit from its research capabilities, the Lee College of Engineering opened the new Siemens Energy Large Manufacturing Solutions Laboratory. Housed in the college’s Energy Production and Infrastructure Building, the new lab will conduct research on the precision dimensional measurement of large-scale energy components.

Installation of New Large-Component Measurement Machine

It took large-capacity trucks, a massive crane, heavy-lift rigging specialists, dismantled doors and cuts made into the walls, and the end result is UNC Charlotte now has one of the largest coordinate measuring machines in the world. Hexagon Metrology has loaned a Leitz PMM-F 30-20-16 coordinate measuring machine to UNC Charlotte for four years. The new machine will be a key component in the Siemens Large Manufacturing Solutions Laboratory, a new lab built on the expertise of the Lee College of Engineering’s Center for Precision Metrology and Energy Production and Infrastructure Center.

Chris Evans Named New Director of Center for Precision Metrology

Dr. Chris Evans has been named the new director of the Center for Precision Metrology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, taking over for Dr. Bob Hocken who retired in June 2014.
