Hundreds of civil engineering students from throughout the southeast had a great time over the weekend, as they competed against one another in multiple events at the annual American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Carolinas Conference.

Conference competition began March 31 with the concrete canoe, surveying and t-shirt events at Ramsey Creek Park on Lake Norman. After delaying for morning thunderstorms, the teams unloaded their canoes. Unfortunately, extremely high winds prevented the teams from racing. Winners were chosen based on their designs, ascetics and display presentations.

The competition moved to the UNC Charlotte campus on April 1. Events included the steel bridge, geotechnical, Mead Paper, quiz bowl, freshmore challenge, transportation, concrete bat, environmental, and hydraulics and fluid mechanics.

The guest speaker for the Saturday night awards banquet was Dr. Patricia Galloway, an international mediator and arbitrator for both energy and construction matters. Dr. Galloway also served as the first woman president of ASCE.

Schools participating in the conference were UNC Charlotte, NC A&T, Duke, NC State, Clemson, South Carolina, The Citadel, Horry Georgetown Technical College, Georgia Tech, Univeristy of Georgia, Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT, India), and Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS, India).
