VOLT Student Energy Organization Formed

Seeing the need for a multi-disciplinary organization focused on energy and power, and able to enhance its members’ skill sets and provide access to industry networks, a group of students in the Lee College of Engineering has formed a new group they call VOLT.

Only a couple months old now, VOLT has already grown in membership and held a number of energy events. Its stated mission is: To empower the energy and power professionals of tomorrow by offering them opportunities to broaden their horizons and enhance their skill sets today.

“We came up with the name VOLT, because the volt is the unit of measure of electrical potential,” said Josh Gibbons,” a Mechanical Engineering student and one of the VOLT founding members. “The electrical volt tells us how much ‘potential’ energy exists within a source. VOLT, the organization, is about helping members develop their potential and finding ways to unleash that potential to make a positive, lasting impact on the world around us.”

To achieve this, the group plans to create professional development opportunities such as resume writing and interaction with industry professionals. In spring 2020, they will also begin participating in community engagement events and doing special team projects that have local impacts or are part of larger national competitions.

“Our membership has quadrupled since the start of the semester,” Gibbons said. “We are placing a huge emphasis on multidisciplinary membership, because it reflects the day-to-day reality of working with all kinds of engineers and non-engineers in the energy workplace.”

VOLT events to date have included participating in the EPIC Energy Career and Networking Event, and doing a tour of the Siemens plant in Charlotte.
