49er Activities for Engineers Week 2020

Engineers Week 2020 is underway, and students from The William States Lee College of Engineering are busy with a number of activities, bringing their enthusiasm and excitement for engineering and other STEM disciplines to children and adults in the Charlotte area.

Founded by the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) in 1951, Engineers Week is dedicated to ensuring a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce by increasing understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers. Lee College of Engineering activities for EWeek are listed below.

Tuesday Feb. 18, 6:30 am. On the WCCB Rising morning show, 49 engineering students will demonstrate hands-on engineering learning activities as part of Wilson’s World. The students involved are Kelsey Lynch, Seth Whitley, Katie Coger, Chioma Nwakalor and Ben Baker, representing ASCE, AWWA, SWE, and Theta Tau.

Thursday Feb. 20, 2-3:30 pm. Careers in Engineering Panel, Duke Centennial Hall Room 345. Lee College of Engineering alumni will discuss career opportunities and job-hunting skill with current students. Alumni participating are Branden Angus (BSME 2018), Project Manager at MSS Solutions; Caroleen Burroughs (BSME 2000), Relationship Manager at Microsoft; Scott Griffith (BSEE 2009), Lead Engineer for Duke Energy Renewables; and Michelle Pozos (BSCE 2017), Design and Construction Engineer for I-77 Mobility Partners at Cintra.

Friday Feb. 21, 8 am. Students Tara Newman, Celeste Tietz and Aunilie Linehan of the UNC Charlotte Society of Women Engineers will talk with the WBTV morning show crew about the upcoming 49er Engineering takeover of Discovery Place, and explain some of the hands-on activities they have planned.

Saturday Feb. 22, 10 am-3 pm. Discovery Place Takeover, Discovery Place Science Museum in Uptown Charlotte. Lee College of Engineering student groups will take over the Sixth Street level of Discovery Place for the third annual event in which they interact with K-12 students and their families demonstrating STEM activities. The student groups involved include 49er Rocketry, ACSE, AWWA, Charlotte Area Robotics, IEEE, SWE, Tau Beta Pi, and Theta Tau.

Crowd Funding Initiatives. New crowd funding projects have started to help Lee College of Engineer student groups travel to their annual competitions. The projects are:
