UNC Charlotte’s Lee College of Engineering is hosting a free educational and networking event on Wednesday Oct. 24, 2018, entitled “Creating and Developing More Diverse Engineering Leaders.”

Lee College of Engineering’s Tony Schmitz invests significant time in his students with a goal to “train decision makers.” For his efforts, he was named the 2018 recipient of the Bank of America Award for Teaching Excellence, one of UNC Charlotte’s most prestigious accolades.

Mechanical Engineering alumna Jessica Rogers is featured by SWE’s ‘All Together’ website for her work serving as an ambassador for the Society of Women Engineers across the globe.

Exploring the field of metrology from a German perspective, a group of Lee College of Engineering students visited a number of German industrial and metrology sites on nine-day trip this summer, and also learned about the culture of the country and earned three hours of course credit.

The Center for Advanced Multimodal Mobility Solutions and Education (CAMMSE) held its first research symposium August 6-7 in Charlotte, bringing together student and faculty researchers from throughout the country to share results and findings of recent and ongoing transportation research.

Nicholas Dove of Elizabethtown has won the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s 2018 Alan Kulwicki Memorial Scholarship for Motorsports Engineering.

UNC Charlotte has received approval from the UNC System to offer the PhD in Civil Engineering. We are awaiting approval from SACSCOC to begin enrolling students. This is the university’s 24th doctoral program. The new degree will provide doctoral-level education for students seeking civil engineering careers in practice, research and teaching/academia.

Dr. Scott Smith, chair of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science at UNC Charlotte, was honored with the Lifetime Service Award by the North American Manufacturing Research Institution of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (NAMRI/SME), at the 46th annual North American Manufacturing Research Conference (NAMRC) held in College Station, Texas.

Building and operating a 1/8-scale hydrogen-powered locomotive named the ‘Hydrogen Hero’, a team of engineering students from UNC Charlotte and the University of Birmingham, England, were the top student team and third-place team overall at the Institute of Mechanical Engineers Railway Challenge held in Leicestershire, England, in July.

Congratulations to Tumininu (Tumi) Lawanson, for being named a Young Clean Energy Innovator of the Year by the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC) at its Intersolar North American ceremony on July 11, 2018 in San Francisco, California.
