Common First Year – Draft
COMMON FIRST YEAR
All Niner Engineers are set up for success from day one.
First year students begin together with a common first year experience.
Unlike many other universities that require new students to decide which area of engineering to pursue on day one, Charlotte offers new engineering students the opportunity to explore the various disciplines for the first year before declaring a major.

Get yourself grounded
All first-year students take a common set of foundational courses, including math, sciences and engineering principles that are needed for all degrees in the engineering college. Students learn core skills in logic, problem formulation and visualization through engaging and innovative instructional methods and projects. Although the curriculum is standardized, each student’s schedule is tailored based on individual background and needs.
If you’re still deciding what area interests you the most, this is the perfect way to explore options.
Most engineering majors have this common year-long curriculum that helps them transition seamlessly into their engineering and engineering technology paths at the beginning of their sophomore year. For those incoming students focused on construction management or fire and safety, your first year has been specifically designed to introduce you to the vast opportunities in those respective industries.
We’ve done the stressful work of lining up your courses for your first two semesters so you can concentrate on enjoying the experience. This sets you up with a solid foundation for the rest of your time at Charlotte.
Take time to explore
In the W.S. Lee College of Engineering common first year, you’ll have the freedom to explore different engineering science and technology disciplines. You will enjoy exposure to each department and hands-on engineering projects before committing to a major. The extensive experience you gain during your first year helps you narrow down your interests and discover your passion. This new simplified process means you won’t have to start completely over with new foundational courses if you change your direction in the first year.

Build your community to set yourself up for success
While you are progressing through the first year, you also have time to become familiar with student resources that will be helpful throughout your years at Charlotte, such as the MAPS program.
Whether you already know your ideal engineering career, or are new to the field and want to explore options, you can start strong at Charlotte and lead yourself to success.
