Designated as “one to watch,” Layne Riggs ’24 just concluded his first career season with back-to-back wins and NASCAR’s Truck Series Rookie of the Year Award, capturing the attention of the U.S. racing community.

Sydney Prince ’22 is a nominee for the 2024 Women in Motorsports North America SHEro Award. Prince is the newly promoted lead engineer on the NASCAR Cup Series No. 84, driven by seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, Jimmie Johnson.

This weekend, NBC Sports spotlighted Sydney Prince ‘22 as being the only female engineer on the pit box at many Cup races, a critical and storied place to be during NASCAR races.

UNC Charlotte celebrated national championship NASCAR driver Alan Kulwicki on December 14, what would have been his 69th birthday.  The William States Lee College of Engineering motorsports students hosted “Underbird Rising – Alan D. Kulwicki Legacy Lunch” to commemorate the impact made on Niner Nation.

When Sydney Prince, a senior mechanical engineering major, climbed behind the wheel of UNC Charlotte’s Formula-style race car in a recent competition, it was the ultimate driving exam. Prince is a member of the Lee College of Engineering Formula SAE team that took its student-designed and built race car to Michigan International Speedway May 18-21 for a global contest.
