Celebrating Engineering Research Teaching and Service Excellence
During the 2022-2023 academic year, William States Lee College of Engineering significantly strengthened its research activity, continuing to elevate its position as an innovative engineering college. With 213 proposals written and over $17.8 million in research awards, which is 30% higher than the prior year, the College experienced its best year ever. This increase aligns with University research award growth, which swelled from $57.3 million last year to $73.2 million this year. The College helped drive UNC Charlotte research activity by contributing over 24% of total university awards.
Dean Keynton shares importance of increasing Hispanic representation in STEM at the White House
Hispanics and Latinos make up nearly one-fifth of the U.S. population, but they hold only 8% of STEM-related jobs. On April 18, Rob Keynton, dean of the William States Lee College of Engineering, was invited with other colleagues, students and professionals from across the country to the White House to discuss how this gap can be closed.

In Hong Yang Earns NSF CAREER Award for Bioelectronics Project
In Hong Yang, Assistant Professor in the William States Lee College of Engineering, earned the prestigious NSF CAREER Award in January of this year to support his investigations in neuromodulation, which is one of the fastest-growing areas of medicine. Yang’s proposal entitled “CAREER: Magnetic Stimulation and Myelination” was awarded $450,710 for a five-year study beginning 2023.
Niner-developed EV battery charging station wins Clean Cities award
EPIC’s PoleVolt™ received the Clean Cities/Clean Fuels Coalition Award from Centralina Regional Council last week on February 8. The recognition, part of the “Region of Excellence” awards program, supports regional partnerships to promote clean fuels and energy efficient mobility options.

Predicting and Mitigating the Spread of Disease
“Antibiotic resistance has been a silent pandemic,” said Mariya Munir, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering in the William States Lee College of Engineering. “My idea was to see how I could come up with different strategies to combat antibiotic resistance in the environment.” Munir, along with co-collaborators from across campus and funding from the NIH, researches antibiotic-resistant bacteria and detects ways to eliminate them.
