Admission Requirements

Construction Management Majors and Fire and Safety Engineering Technology Majors

Students interested in declaring majors in Construction Management or Fire and Safety Engineering Technology must meet the general admission requirements for UNC Charlotte.

Engineering Majors and Engineering Technology Majors

First-Year Students

First-year admission is competitive, based upon an overall evaluation of the high school record, with particular emphasis on advanced courses in math and science. See University Admission Requirements for a detailed description of the criteria.

First-year students may either select a major at the time of their application or may choose to be Engineering or Engineering Technology Undeclared. Most first-year students participate in a Common First-Year (CFY) curriculum, building a strong foundation before transitioning to major-specific College of Engineering courses after completing the CFY. Construction Management and Fire & Safety Engineering Technology have specialized first-year courses and do not participate in the CFY.

Transfers

All transfer students will be evaluated for placement into a departmental program or the Common First Year program based on the evaluation of their transfer credits (consistent with the North Carolina articulation agreements).

  • See University Admission Requirements
  • Minimum GPA:  2.50 (2.80 for Mechanical Engineering)
  • Pre-Major/Prerequisite Course:
    • Engineering Programs: Calculus I course (equivalent to MATH 1241), with a grade of C or above
  • Transferable Credit Hours:  minimum of 24

Transfers from an ABET-accredited engineering program who do not meet the GPA requirement may be admitted upon the recommendation of the chair of the major department.

Dual-Enrolled and Early College High School Students

High school students who are also taking college courses while enrolled in high school will apply online through the Future 49er Web portal as incoming first-year students. Admission decisions will be based on the requirements listed above. Dual enrolled and early college high school students are admitted as new first-year students – not as transfer students – independent of the number of college transfer credits earned prior to graduation from high school. To see how dual enrollment credits will transfer to UNC Charlotte, see the Transfer Credit Advisor.
